Tristan Devereux
Tristan James Devereux was born on March 18, 1983 (though you would never guess it based on his picture.) As a child his favorite past times included playing baseball, basketball and soccer, listening to rap music, annoying his two older brothers, and playing the primitive video games of the 90's.
Eventually the carefree days of high school had to end and Tristan elected to attend Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he double majored in Public Policy and Education Studies with a minor in Music. After graduating magna cum laude in 2005, Tristan moved to Houghton, New York and took a teaching job in the small parochial school of Houghton Academy. After leaving his educators post in 2008 he set up a private tutoring practice, specializing in SAT preparation and history. In his spare time he enjoys laughing with friends, casually playing sports, listening to music, and, of course, writing.
Tristan sees himself as a renaissance man, and thus writes in an eclectic group of topics, ranging from theoretical physics to psychology to politics. However, the topic he enjoys writing about most is unquestionably hip-hop\rap music.
Tristan's love of rap began at an early age after hearing Jay-Z's debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Although he first began to listen to hip-hop due to the catchy beat and counter-culture aspect of it, he quickly learned to appreciate the ability of an effective rapper to tell an entire story or get a point across in a single song while still creating an auditory experience that could be enjoyed simply for its surface (sound) value.
In 2010 Tristan received How to Rap: The Art & Science of the Hip-Hop MC as a birthday present and instantly fell in love with the lyrical complexity and almost formulaic, yet creative, nature of the rhymes that was explained in detail in the book.
Tristan can most often be found writing reviews of the latest rap songs, or making odd observations on the past and present, and perhaps future of hip-hop.
He gives his best wishes to everyone! Happy reading!
